Renmin Park is one of the earliest parks in modern China and the first modern park in Sichuan, established in 1911. It has witnessed the vicissitudes of Chengdu over the past century and holds the memories of the older generation of local people. Here, you can experience the lay back lifestyle of old Chengdu. At Heming Teahouse, which also has a hundred-year history, you can order a cup of Gaiwan tea, watch the tea-making masters perform the “Sichuan Tea Art”, and enjoy the intangible cultural heritage of Chengdu – ear picking and massage. You can also take a boat ride on the lake or watch Chengdu’s folk artists perform “Sugar Figure Blowing” and “Sugar Painting”. Of course, the “sugar figures” and “sugar paintings” are edible! You can also visit the “Matchmaking Corner” to experience Chengdu’s traditional matchmaking culture.
Renmin Park offers different scenery throughout the year. It has the largest orchid garden among urban parks, and in late autumn, gingko leaves will cover the ground. Each year, the park hosts the “Chengdu Chrysanthemum Exhibition” and the “Spring Flower Exhibition”.
If you’re lucky enough, apart from admiring the flowers and taking photos, you might also catch a glimpse of the locally popular “Baba Dance” (a type of outdoor dance exercise)!
